DNA Testing for Red Wattles

This is for DNA testing for stock that is registered with Red Wattle Pigs Plus.

You can use this to put DNA markers on file for your foundation and breeding stock for parentage verification of future piglets, or for parentage testing or verification on existing piglets. Once those piglets are verified, their future piglets can easily be verified as well.

Parentage analysis enables breeders to confirm pedigree relationships. An individual animal will have two copies of each DNA, or alleles, at each marker site; one from their mother and the other from the father. Comparing the profiles of offspring to their dam, as well as potential sires, enables confirmation that those individuals “qualify”, or can be “excluded”, as a possible parent

The charges start at $45.00, plus the charge for the sample collection method.

You have three options for submission:

  1. Blood: Blood cards are $1.500 each. Blood samples will need to be about the size of a quarter and kept clean and uncontaminated until they dry and can be covered. *Please note this may be difficult in many barns.
  2. Hair: Hair cards are $2.00 each, and each sample submitted will be charged a $5 “hair fee” by the lab. Simply pull strands of hair out, obtaining the root, and place it on the card and cover it.
  3. Tissue : Tissue Sampling Units are $2.95. Taking a tissue sample is quick and clean, similar to tagging ears, but requires a Tag Applicator. RWPP will have a tag applicator available to owners with a shipping charge both ways. A deposit sufficient to replace a lost tag applicator will be collected and returned once the collector is returned.

Your total will be your final costs, including all materials and shipping.

You will be redirected to Cedar Break Farms e-commerce site to order your tests and submission supplies. RWPP will ship everything you need to submit your samples, including a return envelope. Gather the samples and return them in the prepaid envelope. RWPP will complete the paperwork, submit your samples to the lab, and forward results to you when they are complete.
