A breed registry, in animal husbandry, is an official list of animals within a specific breed whose parents are known. Animals are usually registered by their breeders while they are young. Such registries usually issue certificates for each recorded animal, called a pedigree, pedigreed animal documentation, or most commonly, an animal’s “papers“. Registration papers may consist of a simple certificate or a listing of ancestors in the animal’s background, sometimes with a chart showing the lineage.
Red Wattle Pigs Plus, as a registry, has an “open book“, meaning animals may be registered even if their parents or earlier ancestors were not previously registered with any particular entity. As an open book registry, we have selection criteria that require an animal to meet certain high standards of conformation and performance.
In order to request entry to and listing with the RWPP Registry, simply complete the registration form. Your information will be evaluated by the registrar. The registrar will submit a decision to the RWPP business committee for consensus or dissent and discussion. We’ll reach out to you with any questions. If your stock is accepted, we’ll email a PDF RWPP certificate of registration to the owner’s email on file. If there are questions or concerns, we will reach out to the owner and/or breeder for clarification. While we provide this service and will do due diligence, the owner is responsible for the information submitted and, ultimately, to the buyer.
We have two classes of registration, “Purebred” and “Recovered”. Stock whose owners practice above and beyond due diligence have the opportunity for each of their animals to earn the Plus+.
- Upon acceptance by the registry, the animal will be added to the database and a certificate of registration issued. Animals meeting the requirements who have documentation of registration from established registries will be added as “Purebred”. Animals meeting the registration requirements without other registration or documentation will be added as “Recovered”.
- “ELITE” status may be awarded to proven, superior breeding stock with purebred registration, based on meeting established criteria.
- “Recovered”
- These are the prime descendants of the original East Texas herds, large, red and wattled. They are fast growing, self-sufficient heritage hogs with solid, functional structure, mild temperament, excellent instincts and production, and delicious red meat.
- Recovered registration’s produce will be assigned a G-generation number starting with G0 for original, undocumented registrations.
- Recovered stock may apply for Purebred designation at G3 or later, with DNA markers on file and proof of consistent produce. Once Recovered breeding stock has been accepted as Purebred, their produce will be entered in the registry as Purebred.

They have large, well-attached wattles and big floppy ears, have the intelligence and emotional stability to be quiet and manageable with their handlers without losing the instinct to protect their piglets from true threats.

While RWPP has no formal association with any other registries or associations, we welcome all red wattled hog owners, breeders and eaters, regardless of affiliation to other associations.
I want to reiterate, in closing, that this is not a club or an association. We don’t have bylaws, a board of directors, dues, fees, or even members. What we do have are rules and standards, a no-bullshit attitude, a commitment to transparency in all things, and a sincere commitment to the preservation and promotion of these amazing animals. In cases of dispute, while we will follow a transparent process, the final say rests with me. If you have questions, ask.
