What about the “PLUS” + ?

Posted on January 18, 2023July 20, 2023 by Becky Burkheart - Cedar Break Farms

January 2023 has come with a bite.  In Texas, temps are swinging from 16 to 85 degrees. The stock is growing winter coats, shedding, and looking for puddles.  Other parts are the country are battling incessant rain on top of drought starved land, and blizzards dumping record depths of snow.

Despite it all, big red wattled pigs, still gonna eat, drink, root, farrow, and grow delicious bacon, chops and hams.

The Red Wattle Pigs Plus Registry is growing as fast as our big red pigs, as more owners and breeders turn to us for simple, sensible rules for documentation and registration of their stock.  That said, as we grow, we’re making some changes that simplify our process, making us stronger, more stable, and easily scalable as our numbers increase.  Updates include renaming our registration classes from C, B, A, to better reflect the stock’s status’ as Recovered and Purebred, with ELITE status being an award to be earned.

We have microchips available at a discounted cost and we now have our DNA testing program up and running for those who choose to test.  It’s exciting to think that with this first round of testing, we’ll have parentage verification two and three generations deep.

If you have wondered what the PLUS is for, this is it.  It’s for documented quality and solid, simple integrity; and we show that on our certificates of registration. Both Recovered and Purebred registered stock earn a “+” for having two of the three: permanent ID in the form of a microchip, for having DNA markers on file or parentage verification, or having photos on file.  This is a way to recognize owners and breeders who are going the extra mile in identifying their stock with permanent records showing who they are and where they came from.

Do you have purebred but unregistered red wattle hogs?  Check out our Recovered registration requirements, get your stock documented and help preserve this amazing endangered breed for future generations.
